It looks like some kind of mechanical “spreader” to widen fixed circumferences but I’m not familiar with it at all. Looking forward to this answer.

@gregmoore You are exactly right. It has a name and a specific material it operates on.

@gregmoore This is correct, though it works on copper pipes as well. This is a swaging tool, which expands the end of a pipe so that the new inner diameter is just bigger than the original outer diameter. You can then join another pipe of equal size without any additional pieces.
