Barred Owl, McKee-Beshers Wildlife Management Area, Poolesville, Maryland. During a family visit to the east coast, I finally got to the WMA, on the north bank of the Potomac River, that my grandfather donated a bit of farmland for many years ago.
In flight.
Wonderful pictures (as usual!). I saw a barred owl for the first time this week through binoculars and I felt like I had won the lottery.
@jabel yeah, I know that feeling. My first was at Christmas in Illinois, so I am not far ahead. I wonder if they are making a comeback?
nice! I’ve been thinking that if I do get into birding (photography) I would concentrate on owls. I find them fascinating.
I love Barred owls! We have a few that will call at night sometimes. They look and sound almost otherworldly.
@ptrck In my experience, owls keep their own counsel about being observed.
@mcg We have Great Horned out here, and a pair were keeping me up the other night.
@mcg The deep eye sockets, and the wings as broad as beaches always get me.
